Method of Studying Deviant Activity in the Real and Virtual Environment

Abstract: 

Based on the works of Russian and foreign researchers in the field of the psychology of deviant behavior, definitions of the terms “real deviant activity” and “virtual deviant activity” have been specified. The article proposes a new toolset for the study of selected types of social activ- ity. The purpose of the study was to develop and validate the original method. The sample consisted of 260 students (checking internal consistency, split reliability, convergent validity n = 210, diachronic reliability n = 50). Psychometric toolkit contains 48 points and 4 scales. The first two scales are aimed at assessing deviant behavior in the real environment; they include 14 points each; their names are “antisocial and asocial real activity”, “self-destructive real activity”. The following two evaluate deviant activity in the virtual environment: “antisocial and aggressive-asocial virtual activity” and “auto-destructive virtual activ- ity” and include 10 points each. Checking obvious, meaningful and convergent validity, split reliability and internal consistency allows us to present the following results. According to the results of expert assessment, 15 points were reformulated, and 5 points were completely excluded. The level of internal consistency in the range of values is α 0,584–0,862, the relationship of the scales 0,257–1. The retest reliability is r 0,948–0,976, at р < 0,001. Method splitting for even and odd points is rt 0,352–0,715, at р < 0,001. Convergent validity indicators (with scales of four known techniques in the context under consideration) vary within the range of values 0,153–0,606, at р < 0,001. The obtained results allow us to state that the psychometric tools presented can be used for research purposes. The future prospect of research is determined by standardization procedures based on samples of respondents from different age groups.
