Peculiarities of Parent-Child Relations in Families Raising a Child with Disabilities

Abstract: 

The article deals with the results of the theoretical and empirical study of the problem of parent-child relations in families raising children with disabilities. Main trends in the development of parent-child relations in a family where child has psychophysical development disorders were determined based on the qualitative analysis of the data available in scientific literature. The empirical study of parent-child relations in families raising mentally challenged children was carried out to confirm theoretical conclusions of the study issue. Based on the application of a complex of psychognostic methods (questionnaire of parental attitudes by A. Ya. Varga, V. V. Stolin; «Film test» method by R. Giles, technique «Images of parental love» by E. S. Schaefer and R. Q. Bell, the test «Kinetic image of a family» by R. Burns and S. Kaufman) an inadequate perception of parents of their child, the destructiveness, the rigidity of a parent position, the tension of family relations were identified on a sample of 30 mentally challenged students and their parents. The applied aspect of the issue can be implemented by the development of psychological programs aimed to prevent and correct destructive forms of parent-child relations in the family, raising a mentally challenged child.
