The Value-Based Personality Structure of Compatriots in the Context of Their Return to their Historical Homeland

Abstract:

The relevance of the research is driven by the importance of studying the value-based personality structure in the context of their adaptation to a new ethno and socio-cultural environment. The goal of the research is to study the value hierarchy of migrants who have received the status of a participant in the State program to assist the voluntary resettlement of compatriots living abroad to the Russian Federation. The theoretical basis for the study is Schwartz’ refined theory of basic personal values. Hypothesis – the priority values of compatriots are self-coping and openness to changes of personal and social nature contributing to successful social and psychological adaptation in the context of their return to their homeland. The study was carried out on the sample of 228 compatriots (107 men and 121 women aged 17 to 63 years old, M = 29.59), divided into two groups, depending on if their return to their historical homeland was voluntary or enforced. In the value structures of compatriots of both groups we discovered both similarity and difference. The similarity is in the high importance of the value of Openness to changes and Self-coping which means all compatriots are oriented to growth and development. The difference is in the lesser value expression of Openness to changes and Self-affirmation among compatriots who immigrated to Russia as a result of military actions on the territory of the Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts of Ukraine, which testifies to their lesser desire for change, personal success, power and wealth compared to repatriates from other countries. The obtained results are of practical importance in predicting the success of social and psychological adaptation of various categories of compatriots and assessing the effectiveness of the implementation of the State Program to promote the voluntary resettlement of compatriots living abroad to the Russian Federation.
